The Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (EES) Division at the CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) is dedicated to addressing critical issues related to energy, the environment, and sustainability. As part of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), NIScPR aims to promote research, innovation, and communication in the fields of science, technology, and policy to drive sustainable solutions.

To achieve this, the department has initiated collaborations with various stakeholders, such as R&D institutions, universities, and industry, and developed integrated approaches. The scientists of the EES Division have diverse backgrounds, including chemistry, physics, mathematics, agriculture, and social sciences. With this team, the division focuses on the aforementioned R&D thematic areas.

Major Areas

1. Research and Innovation in Renewable and Clean Energy:
   • Promoting the development and adoption of renewable energy technologies, such as solar, wind, and bioenergy
   • Enhancing energy efficiency across various sectors, including industry, transportation, and residential areas
   • Researching smart energy solutions by integrating information and communication technologies (ICT) with energy systems for improved energy management
   • Conducting research on alternative fuels, combustion, and fossil fuels
2. Environmental Protection and Climate Change Impact Mitigation:
   • Developing strategies to mitigate environmental pollution, with a focus on air and water quality
   • Promoting climate change adaptation and mitigation measures to reduce the impacts of global warming
   • Supporting natural resource conservation, including water management, sustainable agriculture, and biodiversity preservation
   • Exploring sustainable solutions, such as clean technologies, waste management systems, and the promotion of green technologies, to minimize environmental degradation
3. Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus:
   • Research focuses on the interconnections between water, energy, food, and ecosystems to promote an integrated and sustainable approach to managing these critical resources
   • The division examines how policies and technologies can balance the demands of these interconnected sectors, ensuring resource security for future generations
4. Sustainability Assessment: Agricultural/Food/Water/Environment/Energy:
   • Water footprint and virtual water trade assessment
   • Research on water use in production processes, assessing water footprints, and evaluating virtual water trade to promote efficient water use
   • Focus on sustainable agricultural practices, food security, and minimizing environmental impacts from food production systems
   • Assessment of water resource management practices and strategies for ensuring long-term water sustainability in both rural and urban settings
   • Evaluation of the sustainability of energy and environmental projects, including life cycle assessments and sustainability indices
5. Evidence-Based Policy Recommendations, Policy Impact Analysis, S&T Policies, and Decision-Making:
   • Development of evidence-based policies for sustainable energy, environmental, and resource management, providing recommendations for better governance and improved outcomes
   • Research and recommendations on science and technology policies to foster sustainable development, innovation, and informed decision-making
   • Developing data-driven policies to address issues such as climate change, renewable energy adoption, pollution control, water management, and waste reduction.
