ISSN National Centre- India

The ISSN National Centre is a member of the ISSN global network. The network activities itself are administered through the ISSN International Centre, Paris. The ISSN National Centres, one in each of the 90 countries of the network is responsible for implementing ISSN activities in the respective countries.

Since 1986, National Science Library, CSIR NISCAIR has been the Indian National Centre for ISSN. The National Centre is responsible for assigning ISSNs to serials published in India, and contributing information about Indian serials to the International ISSN Register. The Centre has assigned almost twenty-three thousand ISSNs to Indian serials till date.

To promote open access, the ISSN network initiated the ROAD database which holds the data of ISSN assigned open access scholarly serials. The Indian National Centre is one of the highest contributor in the ROAD database. To promote ISSN, the Indian Centre has initiated several services like the annual Directory of ISSN assigned Indian Serials, ISSN Certificate of recognition etc. In 2015, the ISSN National Centre, India was bestowed the ISSN Award in recognition of its commitment, consistent efforts and contributions for the cause of ISSN.

Who can obtain ISSN?
  • Any new serial print or e whose first issue is yet to be brought out.
  • An existing serial publication which does not have ISSN.
  • Changed serial title(s) whose old titles had already an ISSN.
