National Science Library (NSL) & ISSN Centre

The National Science Library (NSL) was set up in 1964 to provide a broad range of S&T documentation and information services. One of the core objectives of NSL is to build up a comprehensive collection of S&T publications in the country and also offer services on a national scale. The acquisition policy of NSL aims at acquiring relevant S&T publications published in the country and strengthening its resource base of foreign periodicals through the acquisition of the journals in electronic form as far as possible.

The NSL has over 2,51,000 S&T collection (print) which includes books, monographs, bound volume of journals, reports, theses/dissertations, handbooks, directories, standards and patents, etc. The NSL collection policy is to build resources with an emphasis on high end R&D reference sources, Indian S&T publications, foreign language dictionaries, library and information science, information & communication technology, computer science, conference proceedings, technical reports and other sources relevant to S&T community of the country. In addition to serving as a national S&T information source, it provides support to other activities of CSIR-NISCAIR, like compilation of Indian Science Abstracts, Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Abstracts (MAPA), Wealth of India and providing document supply service, etc. More details are available at http://nsl.niscpr.res.in/.

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is a unique and unambiguous identification code assigned to the continuing resources or serial publications such as serials, journals, newspapers, newsletters, magazines, monographic series, etc. in a defined medium. ISSN is used by the publishers, suppliers, libraries, information services, bar coding systems, union catalogues, etc. for citation and retrieval of serials such as journals, newspapers, newsletters, directories, yearbooks, annual reports & monograph series, etc. ISSN National Centre, India is one among the network of over 89 national centres worldwide. Since 1986, National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (erstwhile INSDOC/NISCAIR) has been designated as the national centre for assigning ISSN to serials/periodicals published in India. The Centre is also responsible for contributing Indian records to the world database of ISSN numbers, known as the ISSN Register, maintained by the ISSN International Centre (Headquarters, Paris). The ISSN assigned periodicals are registered in the international database in Paris. The benefits of having ISSN include international publicity and recognition of serials by automatic inclusion in the International Serials Directory Database. Till date, the National ISSN Centre, India has assigned over 24,500 ISSNs to the serials/ periodicals published in India. The National Science Library is engaged in carrying out bibliometric/scientometric analysis of research papers of individual scientists and institutions; Impact Factor calculation of non-SCI journals and detailed analysis of research papers of academic and research organisations. Bibliometric and Scientometric services are carried out for studying growth, development and spread of any area of research, and also for identifying centres of excellence, influential authors etc. The services are useful for heads of departments/institutions, research planners, policy makers and individual scientist. Bibliometric services include citation analysis of research papers of individual scientists, institution and nominees of prestigious awards likes Bhatnagar Prize nominees, Young Scientists award nominees etc. Apart from these, journal Impact Factor (IF) is also calculated for the Non-SCI (Science Citation Index) journals on request.

  • Citation analysis: Checks how many times and where a given paper has been cited in world literature.
  • Impact factor of non-SCI journals: Impact factor of a journal implies the frequency with which the average article of the journal has been cited in a particular year.
  • Institution/Project analysis: This covers analysis of research papers published by the institution, calculating author's productivity, journal preferences, impact factor analysis, subject growth trend analysis, etc.
Name of the Service Charges
Citation Analysis Rs. 1000/- for a period of 2 years per set of 10 papers or less. Rs 60/- per additional 10 papers or part thereof for every additional year.
Impact factor of non-SCI journals

Rs.3000/- per journal per year publishing around 100 articles in a year or less.

Rs.500/- per additional 20 articles or part thereof.

Average of the three years journal publications included for IF calculation will be taken as the total articles published in a journal for calculating the estimate of IF-Calculation service of Non-SCI journal.

Institution/Project Analysis For institution: Rs. 25,000/- + Rs. 500/- per hour of manpower used.

50% extra charges over and above the normal rates will be charged for rush orders.

NUCSSI: National Union Catalogue of Scientific Serials in India (NUCSSI) is the first indigenous database that serves as an ideal tool to access Journal holding’s information. NUCSSI is a data repository of a large number of unique journal titles and library holdings belonging to major state and central universities, Scientific and Technical institutions, Research and Development units of industries, higher institutes like IISc, IITs and professional institutes spread all over the country; and provides information regarding the availability of journal titles in the libraries. Presently it has 572 libraries covering near about 267,881 journal holdings. NUCSSI can be accessed at http://nucssi.niscair.res.in/.
